Tax incentives for research for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) also make it possible to receive retroactive reimbursement of up to 35% of research costs (personnel and contract research costs, as well as depreciation and investments in property, plant, and equipment). All companies that are taxable in Germany and conduct R&D are eligible for this funding. This can also include sole proprietorships, partnerships, and cooperative projects. Funding is available for basic research as well as industrial and experimental research.
Under certain circumstances, funding is even available for software development.

It is not only the federal government that promotes R&D. There are also opportunities at the European level to obtain financial support for your own projects. The world's largest single funding program for research and innovation, Horizon Europe, plays a particularly important role in this regard. 

There is also explicit support for SMEs from various sectors. Within the framework of the focus on innovation and market entry, all SMEs involved in the development of a product, service, or process are eligible to apply.
